Most tradesmen and women will emigrate to New Zealand under the Skilled Migrant Category Residence Visa (SMC) This visa entitles you to live in New Zealand as a resident for a 2-year period. At the end of this period, providing you meet certain criteria, you can apply for permanent residence. To qualify for residence under this category you must:
- Be able to claim a minimum of 160 points through an assessment based on a combination of age, qualifications, relevant experience and an offer of employment in New Zealand
- You must also be aged 55 or under, and meet the English language competency, health and character requirements

- Work to Residence: Long Term Skill Shortage If you have a permanent or long-term job offer in an occupation on the Long Term Skill Shortage List and your qualifications and experience match, you could apply for a Work to Residence Visa. You’ll need to meet the age, health and character requirements.
- Work to Residence: Accredited Employer If you have a long-term or permanent job offer from an Immigration New Zealand accredited employer you could apply for a work to residence visa. You’ll need to meet the age, health and character requirements, and your job offer will need to meet certain requirements.

- Working Holiday Visa This visa helps young people from United Kingdom come to New Zealand. You can apply for this visa if you’re a citizen of the United Kingdom, and you have at least NZ $350 to live on for each month of your stay.
